When To Worry About A Toothache
While all of us at your local dentist Newport Beach hope you’re not nervous about coming to the dentist, the truth is that, ironically, a lot of people are more uncomfortable about seeking dental care when they’re having pain or when they suspect something’s wrong. Consequently, they put off coming to the dentist until the pain grows so severe that they can’t ignore it any longer. The problem with this is that often, by delaying, the problem grows larger than it has to and the fix is more uncomfortable, more expensive, or both. Here’s our take on when you should bring that toothache in (and don’t worry–we’re not going to scold you!).
-
A Toothache For More Than 3 Days
The vast majority of toothaches are caused by cavities, which are actually a type of bacterial infection. Bacteria growing on your teeth eat a hole in your tooth, allowing bacteria, pressure, and even bits of food to contact your tooth’s nerve. This can cause quite severe pain. If untreated, a cavity can become an abscess (see below). If you’ve had a sore tooth for more than about three days, get in to your dentist to have it examined.
-
Swelling In Your Face Or Jaw Combined With Toothache
When a cavity isn’t treated, bacteria can get into the hole in the tooth and cause an abscess, or a pocket of infection/pus. Because of the buildup of pus inside a bony area, an abscess is exquisitely painful. Abscesses involve the immune system and need to be treated promptly. Left alone, they can be dangerous, since the site of infection (your mouth) is so close to your brain.

How To Clean Those Hard-To-Reach Teeth
If you’ve been to your local dentist Newport Beach and gotten a cleaning, you may be wondering how to make that nice, clean feeling last as long as possible between visits. You probably already know the importance of brushing and flossing your teeth at least twice a day, but if you’ve got braces or tight junctions between your teeth (teeth that are very close together) you may have to be more strategic than someone without these challenges.
Use The Correct Tools
When you’ve got tight teeth or braces, the odds are that you’re going to need a more specialized set of dental care tools than the person who can get away with just grabbing whichever toothbrush is on sale at the grocery store. Here are some items that might help you get the reach you need to keep your teeth clean:
Flossing Tools
Regular waxed floss is too thick to get between teeth for many people and can be tricky to maneuver to clean underneath braces. Instead, consider:“Ribbon”-style floss. Designed to slip smoothly between tight teeth, this floss can be easier for some people to maneuver- Flossing picks and “floss threaders” for braces.
- Gum picks – these are soft, brush-type flossing implements
- A “water pick” – although more expensive than floss picks, a water flosser is also the most versatile and gentlest option.

How Much Do You Really Floss?
Why Floss?
Brushing your teeth is very important, but it can’t reach between your teeth or below the gumline. That’s where flossing comes in. Regular flossing with good technique can remove “biofilm”, a thick collection of the bacteria between your teeth that can cause gum disease and tooth infections. Over time, buildup of bacteria can cause tender, bleeding gums, gingivitis, and even put you at risk of tooth loss.
Use Proper Technique
You can always ask your dental hygienist for a flossing demonstration, but correct flossing technique isn’t difficult to learn. Here are some tips:
- use about 18 inches of floss
- wrap one end around the middle finger of one hand, and the other around your other middle finger
- using your thumbs and forefingers, grasp the floss and gently move it between each pair of teeth with a back-and-forth motion, then between the same teeth with an up-and-down motion
- move to a fresh section of floss and do the next pair of teeth
- don’t forget the back teeth
Remember, the idea is to disrupt the bacterial colonies, so floss even if you don’t see obvious debris on the floss. Bacteria, after all, are microscopic, but their effects sure aren’t!

What’s Your Brushing IQ?
Use The Right Toothbrush
While there’s all sorts of designs of toothbrush on the market, you can get your teeth clean with a simple, manual brush with the following features:
- smaller head design to allow the brush to reach the back molars
- soft bristles
- densely-packed, rounded-end synthetic fibers
What if you have arthritis or wrist pain issues? Electric toothbrushes can do a good job cleaning your teeth, too, provided that they use a rotation oscillation action.
Use The Right Brush Stroke
While vigorous back-and-forth scrubbing might seem like it would be more effective at removing plaque, too much mechanical action can actually damage your gum tissue and tooth enamel. Dentists recommend using very short, up-and-down or circular brushing motions to remove plaque on the tooth and near the gumline. Hold the brush at a 45-degree angle to the tooth. Avoid pressing too firmly.
Wondering how firm is too firm? Take a look at your old toothbrushes: do the bristles tend to become squashed and deformed? If you’re worried that you’re pushing too hard as you brush, try holding the handle of the toothbrush with just the thumb and forefinger, almost as you would a pen, rather than gripping it with four fingers.

Looking For Your Ideal Newport Beach Dentist? Here’s Some Tips For Finding A Practice You Love
Dental health is one thing that many people neglect until they have a problem. By then, however, it’s often too late–if you’re experiencing pain, a lot of damage has likely already occurred to your tooth. Why suffer more than you have to? With our tips, you’ll have no trouble finding a local Newport Beach dentist you love. (We are partial to Anthony Rich Dentistry.)
Check Your Dentist’s Reputation
In the internet age, there’s no reason to pick a name blindly out of the phone book. If you’re considering a dentist, a simple first step is to run an online search for their name and practice, and see what kind of patient reviews they have. This also enables you to see any newspaper or blog articles about your prospective dentist.
Check The State Dental Board
Did you know that your state requires dentists to be regulated by a state dental board? You can access their website or give them a call to check whether there are any claims against a particular dentist. Many people omit this step, but if your dentist is in trouble from the state regulatory board, wouldn’t you rather know before you go to your appointment?

Checklist For Your Next Dental Visit
Dental visits are no longer just about oral prophylaxis and cavity removal. Visiting your dentist twice a year is essential to prevent your teeth from getting damaged. However, if you belong to a high risk group- suffering from immune disorders, gum disease, diabetes, or a smoker- dental visits should be more frequently done.
We have prepared a checklist that you should keep in mind for your next dental visit:
Make sure to set an appointment with your dentist.
Avoid waiting for so long in the clinic. Avoid the lines by making sure you have an appointment with your dentist. It is essential to schedule your appointment in the morning because teeth are usually cleaner, assuming you brushed them the night before and as soon as you woke up. You would not want to set an appointment in the afternoon as this would only make you anxious throughout the day just thinking about it.
Note all concerns and questions you have for your dentist.
Due to anxiety, we tend to forget to ask important questions when we’re in the clinic. To prevent this from happening, jot down all your concerns on a piece of paper. You might want to take note of bleeding gums, canker sores that won’t heal fast, pain or sensitivity, cosmetic concerns you might have, a list of medicines you take, etc.
Come in 10-15 minutes prior to your appointment time.
This will give you ample time to fill out any forms the receptionist would require of every patients.
